Bible in schools assembly

Bible Assembly for Term Four

Watch what you watch and watch what you eat.
Mr Marty and Roy were in today for our Bible Assembly to start the term.

We gave Diesel some advice about how he should eat healthier. We need to think about how we can be healthier by eating healthier.

We learned about how marketing advertisers trick us into recognising advertising logos and brands. The average child sees 15 advertisements advertising junk food.

We talked about how we can help people who don't like to read.
As always, we finished with a game of Zonk! - won by the boys 85 - 20

Ki o rahi trials

Our seniors had trials for the school Ki O Rahi teams recently. It was great to see them managing the game themselves and having a great time!

Constructing New Furniture

A Great Example of Teamwork

With moving into a new shared space, we found we needed to purchase a few new pieces of furniture.  Today I decided to let the kids go for it.  This was partly to help develop our team work and communication skills and how to read and follow written assembly instructions.  The fact that it all looked too complicated for me when I opened the box,  also played a part in motivating this exercise.

Three groups worked together and in record time and with so much ease, we soon had two new wheelie chairs and a tote tray trolley.

Working together to put all the parts together.

The instructions were discarded, the communication solid.

Many hands make light work and everybody contributes.

Adding the finishing touches.

All pitching in.

Boom!  Check that out.

Voila!  Another fine creation.

Done and Done!  A solid and sturdy trolley for us to use.

If I knew they were going to nail these so quickly I would have given them a few more projects.  I know what I'm going to do next time we have something to out together.

Collaborating towards self-managing our learning

SOLO and Self Management

We have been using SOLO taxonomy to talk about how we are going to work towards being self managed learners with our devices.

We broke into groups to brainstorm what each category might look like in our new hub.
We then came back inside and collated our ideas together, on the board.

We are on our way to using SOLO to support our use of devices and self management.

Tuakana Teina Time

Sharing Our Learning

Upon the return of students who attended the Student Summit, we held our own workshops back in class.  Here are a few of our creations from our exploring time.
Sophie created this and emailed it to Miss Waho.

They attended (and presented) Toolkits on topics ranging from robotics, voki, scratch coding, using apps...
Afterwards, the 90 students were able to take their new knowledge back and share it with the akonga in their classrooms.

Week Six Value-Being Organised

Being Organised

This week we are focussing on our week 5 value of being organised.  In week 5 we were not so organised and got busy with a lot of things going on.  Being organised when things are really busy is a skill that helps our self management and ability to cope with stress.
Check out the shared slide used to help generate our thinking and learning.

Week Three Quality - Empathy

Make Someone's Day by Showing Empathy

The quality that we are focussing on to help us show our value, Make Someone's Day, is Empathy.

To help our learning and understanding of what empathy is and how we can feel it and show it, we used this slide in our learning phase.

Senior Hub Assembly

Awards Presentation

At the moment we don't have a space where we can all meet for our hub assemblies.  We have been creating slides to show who has received awards that we would usually present.
For week two, our awards went like this...

Writing

Writing Using Imagery

In Writing, we have been learning about the purpose of writing, how to create imagery and writing so we help our audience to remain interested.  Here are some examples of our writing so far:

Dancing Like the Stars 2017

Dancing Like the Stars 2017

The Argentine Tango

This term has ended with a fantastic night of dance at the Isaac Theatre Royal in the annual Dancing Like the Stars show.
Rimu Class worked with dance teachers Gloria and Graham throughout term 2 and have learned the Argentine Tango.  For many of us, it was the first time experiencing this form of dance and performing to such a large audience.

Te Whare Pukapuka o Helen Taite

Lovely Library Time

Our library is on the move soon as we begin to get our building ready for renovations.  Today Rimu Class went to the library to select books we enjoy reading.  Mrs Pam has worked hard with a number of students to create interesting displays that reflect the different cultures within our school, ways we celebrate and areas where we can make use of and enjoy this very special place.

Having a look at the countries that our students come from.
These poppies are tribute to family members who served in war.
There's something special about sharing and enjoying a good book.

Engrossed in reading.
Student librarians have things under control.
No photo bombers...that's a first for Rimu.  They must be really enjoying what they are reading.

Dancing Like the Stars

Dance Beautiful People

Buenos diaz
Today we had our first dance class as we prepare for our performance for Dancing Like The Stars.  We are lucky to have Graham and Gloria who will be working with us for the rest of the term.  We will be learning the Tango.
We have already shown great attitudes and dancing skills so are looking forward to seeing how this develops.
Warming up our bodies
Making sure we can move together
Making sure we work as a group
